Dive Resort, a scuba dive heaven, 1km off the coast of Mabul,
Sabah, Northern Borneo. The resort used to be a Oil Exploration
Platform, These days it is home to divers from all over the
world who want that little bit extra from their dives. Sadly,
all the photo’s of any quality have been lost from the 2002
trip also lost are those from the Papua New Guinea trip of 2002 due to a hard disc failure.
Our big trip of 2002 was Sabah, Australia and Papua New Guinea. We left the UK mid way through November and
had a few days in Singapore to get over The long haul. We were
now off on our way to dive one of The most famous dive sites in
the world.

| We flew from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu where we were
met by May who gave me my onward and return flight tickets, then
on to Tawau on the East Coast of Sabah, just North of the border
with Indonesian Kalimantan, we were met at the airport by the
staff of Seaventures, who then took us overland to Semporna
where we boarded the boat for the dive platform. Our home for
the next 8 days was to be an old Oil exploration platform that
had been towed from Panama and moored about a kilometre of the
Island of Mabul, check out The
platform, it is situated off Mabul and about
10 minutes boat ride from Sipadan, Kapalai is also about 10
minutes away, Mabul and Kapalai are great muck diving sites, take
your camera, the creatures are Fascinating.

| The diving
underneath the Rig reminded me of Stoney Cove except for the
temp, a "cool" 30 C and the fish life is extraordinary. Lion Fish, Frog Fish, Scorpion Fish and the
biggest Moray Eel I have ever seen. The evenings here were
something that we always looked forward to, Me, Jan, Jerry,
Awang, Marshall & Eddie eating and drinking on the rear sun
deck, they were wonderful evenings, listening to Eddies
story’s kept us entertained. Great memories. The accommodation
on the platform was for us, excellent, we were the only guests
on board and were treated like royalty, breakfast at 7am was a
real treat and we dived when we were ready, a 10 minute boat
ride out to Sipadan about 9am. As soon as we entered the water
there were fish everywhere, big schools of Jacks and Barracuda,
more Turtles than we could count, we watched a Shark prowling
around a bommie and bump into a Titan, boy the Shark had a
fright, he was soon gone. |

| We counted about 20 Bumphead
Parrotfish in a herd slowly swimming passed us. The good thing
about our dives was the lack of other boats and divers, we saw
other divers only twice during our 1st week on our first ever
visit here, and they were
going deep. The muck diving we did on Mabul and Kapalai was
fascinating, we had not done this before and did not want our
dives to end. |

| Thanks to Eddie, Gerry and Marshall for a
fantastic week of diving. We have since been to Seaventures
platform a further 5 occasions, 3 times in 2004, and twice in
2005 such is our fascination with the little critters under the
"Rig". A special thanks to May for organizing our
trips in Malaysia, and also to Marshall for all his help over
Christmas 2004 when we
needed it most (he will know what i mean). The
photos on the following pages were all taken underneath or
around Seaventures platform. |
