As stated on the Sipadan Page all photos
have been lost except a few rather poor ones, so my apologies for that, anyway…….The
Photo's with an asterisk * are frames from our video camera.
A long address for somewhere a long way away from the UK, A long trip but one well worth the effort, our dive trip had started when we were on Sipadan a few weeks earlier, after that we spent a few weeks in Cairns, Australia, just chilling out before our trip up to Lissenung Island via Port Moresby and Kavieng. WWW.LISSENUNG.COM Lissenung Island is a 20 minute boat ride out of Kavieng, the Island is run by Dietmar and Edith who made us very welcome, again, when we arrived here we were the only guests for two days, we arrived a few days before Christmas 2002. On Christmas eve we were joined by Fred, Fred was a larger than life character, he was also about 6'6" tall and very funny, he made us all laugh for the duration of our stay. All the photo's below were taken using the video camera, except one or two, which were taken with the Sony P1, those photos are date stamped.

The Island is maybe 300 or 400 metres across and accommodates about a dozen guests at most in traditional style "bungalows" …….there is no aircon but all have ceiling fans and mosquito nets, water for showers etc is rainwater, it is collected and stored, then pumped when you need it. The electricity on the island is provided by a generator.

"Reception" on Lissenung. * |
Me, taking a break after a hard day diving * | |
|
Lissenung Island is situated in the Bismarck Sea, North East of Papua New Guinea, which apparently has the highest recorded average sea temperatures, we logged 31ºC while we were there. Most of the diving requires a short boat ride across "flat as glass" sea to the dive sites, this dead flat sea was beautiful to ride over but underneath the currents were often "raging". One morning we stopped to watch Pilot Whales playing on the surface, a beautiful sight, other times there were Dolphins racing us underneath the bow. |

The diving was excellent, not as prolific as Sipadan, but visibility was great, there were big walls and drop offs, Nudibranches everywhere, and at Boudison Bay the Pelegics would sit in the current waiting for prey. Our stay on Lissenung was made all the better by FRED joining us for Christmas, Fred dressed up as father Christmas and made everyone laugh. Thanks to Edith and Dietmar for looking after us, thanks to Fred for his wit. |
